DiStefano Winery 2011 Semillon, Columbia Valley, $22
Mark Newton launched DiStefano back in 1983 and moved his operation to Woodinville long before that was what the cool kids did. Early on, he made sparkling wine but soon refocused his efforts on Bordeaux varieties (which has since expanded a bit). We rarely see Semillons – too rarely – and this was a real treat. It includes 15% Sauvignon Blanc to add brightness. It is a classic with aromas of melon, fresh fig, a touch of pineapple, lime and even something that reminded us of candied apricot. On the palate, it is a rich, round wine with flavors of Pink Lady apple, candy corn, baked apple and freshly squeezed lemon in the finish. We could see pairing this with crab cakes or an omelette.
