Kana Winery 2008 Scarlet Fire Reserve, Columbia Valley, $25
By Great Northwest Wine on March 11, 2013
This winery in downtown Yakima, Wash., created this Southern Rhône-style blend with an emphasis on Mourvèdre (75%), along with equal parts Counoise and Cinsault. These styles of red wines are becoming more and more successful in Washington, once again proving the versatility of the state’s soil, viticulturists and winemakers. This opens with complex aromas of pomegranate, plum, Dr Pepper and chocolate mint. On the palate, it reveals rich, clean flavors of raspberry, cola, black cherry and black currant. It’s a beautifully balanced wine with modest tannins backing up all the opulent fruit. Pair with game meats, prime rib or a hearty stew.
