JACKSONVILLE, Ore. — Spangler Vineyards in Roseburg took the award for Best Red with its 2010 Claret and Pebblestone Cellars in Medford won Best White for its 2012 Viognier at the Southern Oregon World of Wine Festival.

world-of-wine-logoThe 11th year of the competition drew 179 entries from 46 wineries and was judged by a trio of Masters of Wine, who awarded six double gold medals and seven gold medals.

Judging the competition were Christy Canterbury, one of seven female U.S. Masters of Wine and an author, speaker and wine judge based in Manhattan; Peter Marks, vice president of wine education for Constellation Brands; and Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan, the fourth U.S. woman to achieve MW status.

The Southern Oregon World of Wine Festival has focused on using Masters of Wine for its three-person judging panels, and organizers have recruited 10 MWs in the past four years.

Cuckoo’s Nest Cellars in Cave Junction won Best Other Wine for its 2012 Fizzé, a sparkling Early Muscat created by Foris Vineyards winemaker Bryan Wilson, who produced award-winning versions of that Moscato di Asti style while at Silvan Ridge in Eugene.

The World of Wine Festival continues Aug. 21 with a welcome reception and concludes Aug. 24 with the Grand Tasting at Bigham Knoll in Jacksonville. All medal winning wines will be available to taste.

Pebblestone has established a reputation at the competition for its Viognier, having received a gold medal last year at the WOW for its 2011 vintage from Ellis Vineyards.

And the 2010 Claret delivered Spangler Vineyards its the second superlative award in this competition. Pat Spangler released his blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc earlier this month after selling through the 2009 Claret, which won a gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in January.

“It is getting harder and harder to win these awards,” Spangler told Great Northwest Wine. “The folks in Southern Oregon have really been collectively putting out some extremely good wines.

“For those coming to the festival, I think they will continue to be very pleasantly surprised by just how many good wines they are going to find,” Spangler added. “Both the quantity and quality of wines from Southern Oregon are really reaching higher ground. It’s amazing to see where we are and what has happened in the last 10 years.”

Schmidt Family Vineyards led the competition with six medals, followed by Pebblestone and Quady North with five medals each. Awards were announced Aug. 9 at a dinner following the judging.

“We’ve been very fortunate to attract some top judges, and this year’s judges were impressed not just by the variety and quality of our wines, but also by the incredible potential of our region,” festival chairman Les Martin said in a news release. “The consensus was that we are a wine region on the cusp of being discovered, so I think the future looks very positive indeed.”

Tickets to all the events are available online at www.worldofwinefestival.com. Tickets to the grand tasting may also be purchased at RoxyAnn Winery (Medford), Elegance Fine Wines (Grants Pass), Mercedes Benz (Medford), South Stage Cellars (Jacksonville) and Schmidt Family Vineyards (Grants Pass).
