Mackey Vineyards 2009 Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, $32
Roger and Philip Mackey continue to rejuvenate the vineyard they bought near the Walla Walla River in 2007, and it produced 77% of the grapes for this wine. That’s 18% shy of qualifying to make it a vineyard-designated bottling, but the profile of this wine bodes well for the future as features a purple fruit profile from beginning to end. Plums and Marionberry aromas include cola, cinnamon sugar, vanilla and rose petal. The juicy structure is one of bright pomegranate acidity with a late scrape of tannin and more hints of cinnamon and vanilla in the background. These wines are available in downtown Walla Walla at the Mackey tasting room inside the century-old Dice Building. Rating: Excellent Production: 123 cases Alcohol: 14.4% Website
