Oregon winery wins big in California judging

Don Galleano, a winery owner in the Cucamonga Valley of Southern California, is the chairman of the Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernardino, Calif.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Abacela, a pioneering winery in Southern Oregon, brought home three top awards at the annual Pacific Rim Wine Competition, held in Southern California.

Abacela, which was among the first wineries on the West Coast to plant and produce Tempranillo and Albariño, earned best-in-class awards for its 2013 Grenache Rosé, 2013 Albariño and 2013 Viognier, all from the Umpqua Valley.

Quails’ Gate Estate Winery in West Kelowna, British Columbia, earned two best-in-class awards, as well as a gold medal. Cougar Crest Estate Winery in Walla Walla, Wash., and Sun River Vintners in Kennewick, Wash., each won a best-in-class award and three gold medals. Sun River’s Souzão Angelica was awarded best fortified wine of the competition. Burrowing Owl Estate Winery near Oliver, British Columbia, earned three gold medals.
