Airfield Estates 2012 Spitfire, Yakima Valley, $28

By on October 25, 2014

airfield-estates-spitfire-bottle-nvThe Miller family annually pays tribute to the Royal Air Force’s legendary Supermarine Spitfire fighter with its Super Tuscan-style blend of Sangiovese and Bordeaux varieties from their 950-acre vineyard in Sunnyside, Wash. It carries vapors reminiscent of black cherry, cocoa powder, cinnamon and moist earth before the drink dives into flavors of dark plum and black cherry. The tannin/acid structure tilts toward the lighter side of medium and finishes with a peppering of raspberry, cranberry and white strawberry. Suggested pairings are within the range of tomato-based dishes and Italian fare.
