40. Ponzi Vineyards 2012 Tavola Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, $25
After two trying vintages, Pinot Noir producers in the Willamette Valley welcomed the 2012 harvest, and consumers are beginning to enjoy the stunning results. This sustainably farmed, large-scale Pinot Noir from Luisa Ponzi is gorgeous, starting with its graceful nose of Bing cherry, raspberry, watermelon, apricot and dusty oak. The approach to the palate is silky as black cherry, raspberry and watermelon flavors pick up complexity from lingonberry, graphite, violets and late-arriving plum skin tannins. And fortunately, production was bumped up 20 percent from the 2011 edition.
