These residents of Chicken Dinner Road near the tiny post office in Huston, Idaho, elevated the profile of Malbec in the Snake River Valley by winning best of show at the 2014 Idaho Wine Competition. Now, they are making headlines with Petite Sirah, a red Rhône variety with strong shoulders. Aromas of blackberry, strawberry, cherry candy, Earl Grey tea, white pepper and dried oregano lead to more flavors of blackberry and dark cherry. Its structure of racy acidity and bold tannin picks up notes of cola and vanilla before the balanced finish of strawberry candy. It’s just getting out of the starting blocks, and there’s plenty of yardage left to cover.
