Few wineries have a shorter trip for non-estate grapes than Benton City, Wash., barrister Larry Oates, who lives across the gravel road from Bob Buoy’s vineyard. There’s a bit of age yet a lot of richness with tones of dark black cherry, poached plum, Bruce’s Candy Kitchen chocolate-covered fig, butter rum and crushed walnut. Assertive fruit, rich tannins and a bittersweet chocolate finish give this merit.
