NW wineries earn top honors at Indy International Wine Competition

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – Seven wines from the Pacific Northwest earned unanimous double gold medals at the 24th annual Indy International Wine Competition, staged last week at Purdue University.

The Indy International Wine Competition is considered among the best Midwest wine competitions. This year’s competition drew more than 2,000 entries from 40 states and 11 nations.

Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery in Oliver, British Columbia, earned three double golds, along with a gold medal. Mercer Estates in Prosser, Wash., won two double golds and a gold. Barrister Winery in Spokane won a double gold and two gold medals. Two Vintners in Woodinville received a double gold. And Tsillan Cellars in Lake Chelan, Wash., won three gold medals.

Overall, Northwest wineries won 70 medals in the competition.

Amid this year’s judges was Vicky Carwein, chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Carwein is the former chancellor of Washington State University Tri-Cities in Richland and championed putting the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates WSU Wine Science Center on the WSU Tri-Cities campus.
