South Stage Cellars 2012 Carménère, Rogue Valley, $28

By on February 19, 2016

south-stage-cellars-logoThe Moore family of Quail Run Vineyards adds another layer to its storied relationship with Oregon winemaker “Hollywood” Joe Dobbes, who bottles this fascinating red Bordeaux grape for his friends’ brand in Jacksonville. It carries an intense color as the nose sifts out layers of fresh and sweet herbs – thyme, rosemary and peppermint – backed by black currant, dark cherry and boysenberry. There’s more green peppercorns on the entry but a wealth of blackberry and black cherry. Black plum skin tannins and a thrust of pomegranate acidity make this a highly textured and rather fascinating expression of Carm.
