Charlie Lybecker remains devoted to Rhône Valley varieties and continues to sharpen his approach by focusing on Lawrence Vineyard in the proposed Royal Slope American Viticultural Area for the blend of Viognier (60%) and Roussanne (40%). There’s no oak involved, which keeps it fruity and lively, starting with aromas of Bosc pear, peach candy, jasmine and lemon. Flavors of starfruit arrive early as the full-bodied palate gathers up honeydew melon and Jonagold apple. And yet, the backbone of acidity makes for a juicy finish and lasting orange pith for complexity. Suggested pairings include Surrell owner/chef Aaron Tekulve’s Tomato Corn Bread with fried green tomato, smoked butter and tomato sour cream.
