SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Pacific Northwest wines dominated at a top international wine competition held in California.

At the 2013 Pacific Rim Wine Competition, 14 wines from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia won gold/best-in-class awards, while another 19 wines won gold medals.

British Columbia wines, primarily from the warm Okanagan Valley, stood out, as Desert Hills Estate Winery won three best-in-class nods, while Red Rooster won two best-in-class and two gold medals. Kestrel Vintners in the Yakima Valley town of Prosser also won two best-in-class awards.

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery in Oliver, B.C., won a best in class as well as five gold medals.

Northwest wines won 130 total medals.

The competition, held last week, is part of the National Orange Show in San Bernardino, Calif. The judging is run by Don Galleano, who owns a winery in California’s Cucamonga Valley. The chief judge is Coke Roth, a prominent wine judge who lives in Washington wine country.
