WALLA WALLA, Wash. – A Syrah won best in show at the inaugural Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition.

Balboa Winery, owned by Tom and Amy Glase, is south of town near the Oregon border. The winery’s 2010 Syrah from estate grapes earned top honors at the competition, which was held at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology and Viticulture.

Plumb Cellars, a downtown winery, won two gold medals – for its Damn Straight red blend and its Cabernet Sauvignon.

The competition was run by Great Northwest Wine, and proceeds from the competition raised enough for a $1,000 scholarship for viticulture and enology students at the community college.
