IRVING, Texas — Texan native Marty Clubb and his L’Ecole No. 41 led all Pacific Northwest wineries with two gold medals at the 30th annual The Dallas Morning News and TEXSOM International Wine Competition, which was staged last month at the Irving Convention Center.

lecole-no-41-perigee-2010-bottleThe Walla Walla Valley winery won golds for its 2010 Pepper Bridge Vineyard Apogee ($49) and 2010 Seven Hills Vineyard Estate Perigee ($49). Both are red Bordeaux blends. Clubb, a graduate of Texas A&M, is managing winemaker and co-owner of L’Ecole, founded in 1983 by his in-laws Jean and Baker Ferguson.

“That market is in our top 10, with potential to grow more,” Clubb told Great Northwest Wine. “I’m not sure I have played the ‘old boy’ Texan line enough to make any difference, although (Oregon winemaker) Rollin Soles and I did a Texas winemaker event at The (George W.) Bush (Presidential) Library a few years ago.”

Four Ste. Michelle Wine Estates brands were awarded gold medals — Anew Winery 2012 Riesling, Chateau Ste. Michelle 2010 Meritage, Col Solare 2009 Red Wine and Snoqualmie Vineyards 2010 Whistle Stop Red.

Competition founder/chair Rebecca Murphy recruited seven Masters of Wine and 13 Master Sommeliers as part of her pool of 61 judges, who worked in 14 panels to evaluate 2,729 entries from 27 states and 20 countries.

“In addition to serving as a buying guide for consumers, our goal over the past couple of years has been is to make the results relevant to sommeliers and other restaurant professionals as well,” Murphy said in a news release. “So while many popular and well-known consumer brands continue to win plenty of medals, we have very high-end wines as well.”

California wineries dominated the competition, producing 125 gold medals out of its 1,445 entries. Washington state was second with 15 gold medals among the its 169 entries. Texan wines generated 105 medals, with 11 golds from 172 entries.

Overall, there were 227 gold medals, 627 silver medals and 852 bronze medals awarded.
