SAN FRANCISCO – A Washington winery was named Winery of the Year at the nation’s largest and most prestigious international wine competition.

Maryhill Winery in Goldendale brought home the title after winning 28 medals, including two best-in-class awards, a double gold and four golds, at the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

When the news was announced, Maryhill Winery founder Craig Leuthold happened to be in California to introduce his winery to markets up and down the Golden State.

“It’s really up there with one of the best awards a winery can win,” Leuthold told Great Northwest Wine. “And winning it in the heart of California wine country makes it just a little bit sweeter.”

The San Francisco International Wine Competition is run by famed wine personality Anthony Dias Blue and is the largest international wine competition in the country with more than 4,700 entries. For this year’s competition, Maryhill Winery was competing with about 1,400 wineries from 26 states and 31 countries.

“We’ve entered a lot of competitions, and this is the first time we’ve come out on top like this,” he said. “It’s a testament to the quality of wine coming out of Washington state.”

Northwest wineries won 15 unanimous double gold medals. Thurston Wolfe in Prosser, Wash., won two double golds and a gold medal, while College Cellars in Walla Walla also earned two double golds.
